 Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I use I device instead of a bag to clean up after my dog?

  • Dog waste contains viruses, bacteria and parasites that can be harmful to humans and the environment, as well as pathogens including e coli, giardia and salmonella.

Are all biodegradable bags the same?

  • No, some biodegradable bags are made of different types of recycled material. Others are derived from plant and vegetable based materials.

Are all compostable bags the same?

  • 50% recycled plastic.

  • TDPA additive.

  • Vegetable-based.

  • Made from a resin derived from plants, vegetable oils and compostable polymers.

What happens to the bag once I throw it in the trash?

  • Right now, once you throw any dog waste bag, plastic, biodegradable or compostable, into the trash, it goes into the landfill.

Can I flush my dog’s waste down the toilet?

  • According to the EPA, flushing just the waste (NOT the bag) is safe. But, how realistic that? If people aren’t picking up the waste and putting it into a bin, are they going to carry it home, and put it in the toilet - not to mention what to do with the dirty bag?

What does composting mean?

  • Composting is an aerobic method (meaning that it requires the presence of air) of decomposing organic solid wastes. It can therefore be used to recycle organic material. The process involves decomposition of organic material into a humus-like material, known as compost, which is a good fertilizer for plants.

Why can dog waste be composted for fertilizer for greenery and not edible greens?

  • Compost coming from dog waste should be used for non-food plants. You don’t want to expose any vegetation to roundworm.

What happens if dog waste is not “firm”? Can I still use Curbicus?

  • You might want to do what you do when using just a bag, place some newspaper down first and then use Curbicus.

What size dog is Curbicus best for?

  • This version is V1, for dogs weighing 35 lbs and under. V2, for dogs 35-65 lbs, will be out next year.

Do I need to clean the device? If so, how?

  • Ideally, the device will stay completely clean. Accidents happen, so you’ll be able to wipe it off with a wet, soapy towel.

Curbicus is a patent-pending collection device that eliminates the “gross factor” when handling dog waste, and keeps our streets clean. Curbicus is a compact cylindrical device, weighing 1.5 lbs, and can attach to a dog leash or the pet parent’s wrist. It contains a small, battery-operated vacuum mechanism and self-closing compostable bags, making it an easy one-handed, two-step process. We are working on setting up a network of designated compost bins throughout cities, starting in NYC.
